Community Spotlight: People Making a Difference

North Denver has had our shares of ups and downs, but we know that community comes together when it matters most. We’re highlighting community members who are making a difference in our new segment. If you know a person, organization, or local business who deserves recognition, email news@DenverNorthStar.com to let us know.

The Denver Elks Lodge was shrinking only a few years ago, but has rebounded and grown in membership. Members decided to utilize their growing community in order to give back, donating $1,000 each to both Bienvenidos and to Food for Thought Denver. They are also planning on giving away several $1,000 scholarships for graduating seniors headed towards college or trade schools. Katherine Cornwell started Sunnyside Urban Farm in her backyard, selling seedlings and plants. This year, she’s donating the entire profit of her seedling sales to Bienvenidos Food Bank. Cornwell, who helped make more backyard food sales legal in Denver has raised over $6,000 for the food bank with help from Red Egg Marketing and Sunnyside United Neighbors Inc.
